The Story of Regan: A Life Shaped by Thoughts
Once a very cute baby boy, Regan is now an adult. He is a successful person now. He has made a fortune. But it was not as good as it is now, and the journey to this point came at a lot of cost too. Also, it could have been much better if he had taken some other decisions instead of what he actually did.
Looking back, he wonders how he made this fortune. He found that his decision to become a salesperson and his passion for it were most responsible for his success.
When he goes deeper into this thinking, he recalls his childhood, when he saw his uncle, who had made a lot of fortune. Regan’s family was not solvent. They received unspoken mistreatment from his uncle’s family in their behavior.
Then Regan carefully observed his uncle’s everyday actions. Thoughts after thoughts, in the form of ideas, kept coming to him. He chose the ideas and thoughts based on his desire to be wealthy like his uncle.
He got into the same profession as his uncle because his mind was full of information shaped by his perspective toward his uncle.

The Cost of Misguided Desires
His desire was so burning that, on the way to his fortune, he lost his health and love, constantly discarding other options to make wealth.
At this stage of life, he realizes he could have done better if he had taken the opportunity to explore another sector like IT. Because now he realizes that becoming a salesperson was his uncle’s passion, not his. His passion was in computers.
All the thoughts — beliefs, desires, fears, experiences, and reality he went through — forced him to take actions that shaped who he became and how he has led his entire life till now. It was not good.
He could have made his past life healthier and happier along with wealthier if he had observed his mind and chosen his thoughts carefully.
The Realization
Analyzing his past life, he found that his thoughts of becoming like his uncle made him forget his true self. Mistakenly, he believed that his uncle’s passion was his passion.
He never realized his anger toward his uncle’s family was actually burning himself.
His entire life, he invested in becoming like his uncle to respond to the mistreatment his family received. He tried to respond to his suffering from poverty, even long after the poverty was gone — so deeply that he had no time to realize his peace, health, and family were slipping away from him.
All these incidents could have been different if he had just taken quiet time for himself and observed what was actually going on in his mind. If he had observed, What thoughts were coming to his mind? And questioned those thoughts: Are these true? Is this really serving me?
Carefully choosing thoughts, reforming beliefs and desires that actually worked for him, and finally building healthy habits — could have saved his entire life.
Emotions, Thoughts, and Action
Thinking generates emotions. Thinking about his past life and all his mistakes, he felt upset and regretful for weeks. But finally, he realized — it’s not finished.
He will make the rest of his life wonderful and become grateful to the universe.

Understanding the Role of Thoughts
Your thoughts come to you involuntarily.
You have the power to choose your thoughts among the ones that come to you.
But you cannot choose any thought that has not come to you.
You choose thoughts based on your desires and beliefs. Your thoughts come to you based on your reality, experiences, and the information you have been fed. You pick one of the thoughts that appear to you. One thought after another creates your thinking.
You may assume you are in control of your thinking, but no thinking can happen without thoughts. You consciously or subconsciously start thinking. This thinking creates emotions in you. Based on your thinking, you develop emotions. You take actions based on your emotions.
Reality, experiences, luck, and outer influences may deviate your actions from what you originally intended. But outer influences may not be repeated.
Your actions will be repeated, as repeated emotions will be created as long as the beliefs and desires remain the same.
Eventually, you do what your desires, beliefs, fears, and other emotions altogether force you to do by choosing the thoughts.
Where Do Thoughts Come From?
Your beliefs, desires, and fears are also formed from thoughts.
They were shaped in your early life through the experiences you went through.
Another influencer of your thoughts is evolution — your survival instinct, built-in desires and fears, your reproductive drive, and basic physical needs like food and water.
So, altogether, your actions and outcomes are the result of the thoughts you’re having now.
Little by little, your actions make you, and you become what your thoughts are.

How to Examine the Power of Thought
Realizing or understanding that thoughts are controlling your life is difficult indeed.
We are so indulgent in our thoughts that we cannot understand their presence and activities separately.
But fortunately, to examine the role of thoughts, we do not need to do any huge experiments.
A Simple Self-Reflection Exercise
- Pick an outcome of your life.
- Identify the actions you took to get there.
- Find the beliefs, desires, fears, and emotions behind those actions.
- Examine the thinking that shaped those actions.
- Identify the thoughts — and their sources.
Example: Your University Degree
Let’s say you got a university degree or any achievement you are proud of . Sit quietly and recall how you got this.
Was it an accident?
No. Luck may have been involved, but it was not an accident.
Ask yourself:
- How did you make this decision?
- How many options did you say no to in order to choose this one?
- Did you have the information that this degree would bring status?
- Was that information correct?
- Did you actually prefer status over wealth?
Be honest with yourself while answering.
